Breakthrough Energy Fellows

To reach net-zero emissions by 2050, we need to substantially increase the number of new technologies with the potential to dramatically reduce carbon emissions.

Climate innovations face barriers not seen in software or biotech, and innovators need a custom-built platform that focuses on achieving new pathways to bridge the gap from lab to market.

The Breakthrough Energy Fellows program is a global initiative designed to find and support amazing people and teams working to commercialize early-stage climate innovations with the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by 500 million tons per year by 2050.

Focus for Cohort 2

Technology and geographic focus areas will continue to expand as the program evolves. Cohort 2 is focused on the following:

Technologies

Breakthrough Energy is focused on technologies, processes, or materials that can reduce CO2 emissions by 500 million tons per year by 2050.

We’re interested in a wide variety of sectors with particular focus on innovations in cement, steel, hydrogen, electrofuels, food and agriculture, long duration (seasonal) energy storage, and carbon dioxide capture, storage, and sequestration. We are taking an open-ended approach and look forward to receiving submissions across a broad range of innovations.

The program seeks applicants who are pursuing high-risk and high-reward projects. We understand that any path to zero requires substantial risk. We’re looking for ambitious, out-of-the-box ideas that have the potential for enormous climate impact.

Geographies

In Cohort 2, we are seeking applications from: North America, Central America, the Caribbean, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Europe, Turkey, Israel, United Arab Emirates, South Africa, Singapore, Australia, and New Zealand. Applications from other locations will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

We will fund two types of participants in Cohort 2: Breakthrough Energy Fellows and Explorer Grants.

Breakthrough Energy Fellowship Overview

Who We’re Looking For

The Breakthrough Energy Fellowship serves two kinds of Fellows to participate in the full-time two-year program: Innovator Fellows and Business Fellows.

Innovator Fellows are scientists and engineers with exceptional climate innovations who are passionate about commercializing their technology.

Business Fellows are entrepreneurial and experienced experts who can complement the innovators’ skills to help accelerate their path to market.

During the program, Innovator Fellows and Business Fellows will work shoulder-to-shoulder to help propel climate innovations toward widespread adoption.

Explorer Grants Overview

Who We’re Looking For

Many researchers and professors have incredible ideas that, without support, often end up sitting on a shelf. Breakthrough Energy wants to further this research and put these ideas on a path toward commercialization. Therefore, in addition to the core Breakthrough Energy Fellowship, we are offering Explorer Grants to fund cutting edge climate research projects within universities and research institutions. We are looking for individuals with early-stage technologies who may not be ready to commit full-time to a Fellowship program. This funding is directed toward achieving milestones to advance technologies toward a commercialization pathway. Successful projects may be eligible for a full Fellowship in future cohorts.
